Potential Risk With No Uninterruptible Power Supply
Our primary goal at Legacy Designs is to inform, educate, and support professionals working in a Control Room, Command Center, and Networking environment. We have found there is a wealth of knowledge around these particular industries, but no real platform consolidating this information into an easily obtained network of support without a subliminal selling agenda. Therefore, we have broken down this information and developed a pipeline to address common issues within the Technologies, Design, and Operational challenges faced by employees in Mission Critical Environments. In this blog we will touch on the catastrophic risks associated with Commercial and Industrial organizations who do not currently possess a properly functioning Uninterruptible Power Supply.
What Happens Without a UPS
It may seem crazy to think organizations do not have a proper redundant power source, but this is exactly the case for many organizations. Whether they never made the initial investment, were negligent on proper UPS maintenance, or never replaced the Uninterruptible Power Supply at the end of its life, the reasons can be numerous. Each individual has their motive for why the investment was not made which can be completely justified at that current point of time. A UPS is like insurance. Everyone believes they can get by or do not necessarily need the resource, until the catastrophe strikes. An Uninterruptible Power Supply can be quite the upfront investment; But what happens to your facility/business in an Emergency situation, if your building is not prepared?
The most relevant and widely known recent catastrophe, was the Nuclear Meltdown at Fukushima. Of course, most disasters will not compare in significance to Fukushima, but that is not to say it is not catastrophic in relevance to each specific organization. If Fukushima would have taken the necessary precautions prior to the Tsunami, the crisis could have been averted. They even admit toward the end of this article, “Tepco could have taken steps that might have prevented the Fukushima accident.” They simply did not believe a Tsunami of that size would hit the plant in their lifetime…. even though they realized it was a possibility.
What Does This Mean
And that is the point we want to stress. Why set an industrial plant up for failure through being negligent to situations that could put businesses, clients, and more importantly, LIVES at risk.
Over the course of the next few weeks, we will be highlighting the different factors that play a significant role in determining how, “at risk” your organization is. How reliable is your UPS, when would one consider replacing their Uninterruptible Power Supply, what Backup Power should you consider, and what possible factors are opening your organization up to risk of negligence. All of these and more will be covered in the coming months.
